Yes, dachshunds are smart — genuinely, measurably smart. They rank 92nd out of 138 breeds in obedience intelligence, but that test only measures how quickly a dog follows commands from a human. It doesn't measure problem-solving, independent thinking, or the kind of intelligence that lets a twelve-pound

Crate training a dachshund puppy isn't just about housebreaking or keeping your shoes alive — it's medical preparation. One in four dachshunds will face IVDD at some point, and conservative treatment means four to eight weeks of strict crate rest. A dog who's never been

Yes, dachshunds can get along with cats — many live with them happily for years. But dachshunds were bred to hunt small burrowing animals for six centuries, and that prey drive doesn't vanish because you brought home a kitten. The answer depends on timing, introductions, and knowing which specific

Dachshunds lick more than most breeds because of a combination of strong one-person bonding instincts, breed-specific skin conditions, and a self-reinforcing endorphin loop that makes licking feel genuinely good. Most of it is normal affection. But if your doxie is licking floors, walls, or their own paws

Dachshunds aren't stubborn — they're independently intelligent. Bred to hunt badgers alone underground, dachshunds were selected for centuries to make life-or-death decisions without a handler's input. What looks like defiance is actually a dog doing exactly what 600 years of German engineering told

Most dachshunds begin to settle down between 1 and 2 years old, after the adolescent hormone surge fades and their brain's impulse-control wiring finishes developing. But "calm" for a dachshund doesn't look like "calm" for a Golden Retriever — and that'

Dachshunds dig because they were literally engineered for it. "Dachshund" means "badger dog" in German, and for over 600 years these dogs were bred to pursue prey underground — digging into burrows, navigating tunnels, and fighting badgers in the dark. That instinct didn't disappear when

Dachshunds are one of the clingiest dog breeds because they were selectively bred for centuries to work in close partnership with a single hunter — following them into underground badger dens where maintaining proximity was literally a survival mechanism. That cooperative hunting DNA, combined with a documented oxytocin bonding loop triggered

Dachshund puppies start losing their 28 baby teeth around 3.5 to 4 months old, and most have all 42 adult teeth by 6 to 7 months. But dachshunds sit at the intersection of three dental risk factors — small breed, long-nosed skull, and breed-specific genetic malocclusion — that make

Yes — dachshunds ranked number one for stranger-directed aggression in a University of Pennsylvania study of over 15,000 dogs. But "aggressive" is a misleading label for what's really happening. What you're seeing is a badger-hunting dog whose courage, pain sensitivity, and territorial

Dachshunds shake for many reasons — cold, excitement, anxiety, nausea, and old age are all common and usually harmless. But in this breed specifically, shaking can also be one of the earliest signs of IVDD-related back pain, and that's the one you can't afford to miss.

Dachshund puppies reach their adult height and length by about 8 to 12 months old, but they continue filling out — building chest depth, muscle, and their final body shape — until roughly 12 to 18 months. Miniatures finish faster (closer to 10-12 months), while standards may keep maturing into their
