Dachshunds can swim, but they're not built for it. Their short legs and heavy barrel chests make them tire quickly and sink easily. A life jacket isn't optional — it's the single most important piece of gear you'll ever buy for a dachshund

The best toys for dachshunds are puzzle feeders, burrower plushes, and snuffle mats — toys that engage the hunting brain and burrowing instinct this breed was built for. Equally important: avoid toys that encourage jumping, vertical tugging, or twisting, which put unnecessary stress on a spine that's already at

Dachshunds bark so much because they were literally bred for it. Their ancestors hunted badgers underground, and barking was the communication system that told hunters where the dog was — sometimes several feet below the surface. That instinct didn't go anywhere just because your doxie now lives on a

Dachshunds are prone to separation anxiety because the breed was built to work alongside a handler and bonds intensely with one person — often following them room to room. This "velcro dog" trait is normal dachshund behavior, but it crosses into separation anxiety when your dog can't

Potty training a dachshund takes 4 to 6 months of consistent scheduling, positive reinforcement, and breed-specific adjustments — particularly skipping the puppy pads and watching for their famously subtle body language. Standard puppy-training advice was written for Labradors. Dachshunds are a different animal entirely. You know what nobody tells

Dachshunds come in three coat types — smooth (short-haired), longhaired, and wirehaired — plus two sizes (standard and miniature), making for six possible combinations. Each coat type has a different origin story, a subtly different personality, and completely different grooming needs. The smooth came first. The wire showed up last, with

Dachshunds typically live 12 to 16 years, making them one of the longer-lived dog breeds. A 2024 UK study found dachshunds had a life expectancy of 13.2 years — higher than the 12.7-year average for purebred dogs — with miniature dachshunds averaging 14 years. Weight management, regular exercise,

Dachshunds were bred in Germany to hunt badgers — the name literally translates to "badger dog" (Dachs = badger, Hund = dog). Originally called the "Dachs Kriecher" (badger crawler) or "Dachs Krieger" (badger warrior), these dogs were engineered with short legs, a deep chest, and a fearless

Dachshunds are trainable — but they're not Golden Retrievers, and training them the same way will frustrate everyone involved. Ranked in the "average working intelligence" tier by canine psychologist Stanley Coren, dachshunds were bred since the 1500s to hunt badgers underground and make independent decisions without human

Dachshunds burrow because they were literally bred to do it — "dachs" means badger, "hund" means dog, and for over 400 years this breed was engineered to chase badgers into underground tunnels and fight them in the dark. Every part of the dachshund body — the short legs,
